What is the Uzumaki anime release date? When it comes to horror, Junji Ito is one of the best-known and respected names in the business. From psychological distress to immortal girls terrorizing folks, Junji Ito always delivers fear. And now one of his best works is being adapted for the small screen: Uzumaki.
Uzumaki is set to be one of the best anime series in recent years. In fact, it’s safe to say that all of us spiral face fans are shaking with excitement for the new anime, which is based on the manga of the same name – originally published in 1998. Set in the small seaside town of Kurouzu-cho, the horror anime will follow two high schoolers dealing with a supernatural curse plaguing the city and its residents.
But you may be asking yourself, when is the Uzumaki show coming out? Or wondering if the anime will follow the manga’s story? Well, worry not, horror hounds – we’ve got you covered. From the Uzumaki anime release date, trailer, plot, and more – here’s everything you need to know about Junji Ito’s upcoming series.
Uzumaki anime release date speculation
The Uzumaki anime series will be released in late 2023.
Jason DeMarco (Adult Swim’s Senior Vice-President) also confirmed this in a Tweet, saying, “Coming later this year!” Accompanying his post, Demarco also shared a first-look clip of the series to prove that the anime is indeed on track and work is actively being done to finish it. So, with that in mind, it looks like Uzumaki will come out in November or December.
Prior to this good news, it seemed like Uzumaki was, ironically, a bit cursed when it came to its production. Originally, the series was meant to come out in 2020, then Covid- 19 hit, and the animated series was delayed. The anime was then meant to be released in October 2022. However, it was delayed again due to unsatisfactory results with the show’s production.
While all these delays are disheartening, it does tell us that work on the anime is still being done and that the show is in its final stages of production. So, the 2023 release date is pretty much set in stone.
Is there a Uzumaki anime trailer?
Yes! We finally have a Uzumaki anime trailer, as well as a handful of other small teaser clips!
In June 2021, Adult Swim revealed a first-look video that provided horror fans with an update on the production as well as a sneak peek at the animated series. In the teaser, we see the young girl, Kirie Goshima, walking towards the black-and-white town of Kurouzu-cho as ominous music plays.
More recently, the first full preview clip from the series dropped in on July 23, 2023. It shows a full scene, with the glorious animation on full display. Check it out below:
What will happen in the Uzumaki anime series?
The Uzumaki anime plot will follow the citizens of the city of Kurouzu-cho, who soon become plagued by spiral curses and edge closer to insanity.
The primary characters who we will be following are the young girl Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito as they face supernatural challenges haunting their home. The anime will likely cover the entire story of the manga, meaning we will see some fun snail transformations, hypnotizing faces and hair, and some hardcore typhoons.
We will also see Kirie and Shuichi trying to escape Kurouzu-cho and subsequently learning more about the curse hovering over the city. However, there is something that all of us Junji Ito purists have to keep in mind when it comes to the new anime’s plot.
The Uzumaki anime will consist of four episodes, so changes will likely be made to the story to account for the time constraints. This means some story beats may be altered or left out altogether. We will keep you posted as more details filter in.
Who is in the Uzumaki anime cast?
The Uzumaki anime cast and crew are stacked with talented names. Playing the leading roles of Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito will be Uki Satake and Shin-ichiro Miki, respectively.
Satake is known for past work on hit anime series such as Mob Psycho 100 and Space Dandy. Fans may know Miki as the original voice of the anime character James in Pokemon. Miki also voiced the My Hero Academia character Sir Nighteye. So yeah, Uzumaki has some seasoned stars in its roster.
Here is the Uzumaki anime cast list:
- Uki Satake as Kirie Goshima
- Shin-ichiro Miki as Shuichi Saito
- Mariya Ise as Azami Kurotani
- Wataru Hatano as Okada
- Mika Doi as Yukie Saitou
- Takashi Matsuyama as Toshio Saitou
Where can I watch the Uzumaki anime series?
When it releases later this year, the Uzumaki anime series will be available to watch on Toonami via Adult Swim.
However, it is also likely that the series will head to Crunchyroll after its initial debut. Originally, the anime adaption of Uzumaki was first announced at the Crunchyroll Expo in 2019. Since 2019, Crunchyroll has also been supporting publicity for the show, posting updates and sharing trailers.
So, it seems likely that the streamer’s dedication to the series is due to a mutual benefit. Stay tuned for more updates! In the meantime, we recommend heading to Crunchyroll anyway since it has some of the best shounen anime for you to enjoy while we wait for Uzumaki.
How many episodes will the Uzumaki anime series be?
The Uzumaki anime will consist of four episodes when it is released later this year.
This is remarkably shorter than the recent Junji Ito Maniac series, which had 12 episodes. However, this short length isn’t a bad sign. Since the series has been delayed for creative reasons in the past, we know that the crew is extra concerned about quality.
With that in mind, it seems like the Uzumaki team won’t try to stretch out storylines in order to make more episodes. So, with no filler, and no strange additions to the original work, it can only be a good thing, right? We know that there must be a story and pacing reason for the four-episode choice, so we have faith that the low episode count is for the best.
