Nicholas Hoult will lead the cast as the titular character Renfield. It is his first time in a leading role since the release of drama movie Tolkien, in 2019, in which the actor played the creator of the Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth, JRR Tolkien. This will be a completely different shift in gears as the actor pivots to comedy and horror.
In a piece of particularly inspired casting, Nicolas Cage portrays the vampire lord Dracula. The actor is quite something when seen in character, with sharp yellow fingernails, purple lips, pale skin, slicked-back hair, and deeply coloured clothing.
Awkwafina also plays Rebecca Quincy, Renfield’s burgeoning love interest. Awkwafina showed off her comedic talents in MCU movie Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. She highlighted that she was able to combine humour with an emotional heart, as proven with her role in the new release.
What is the Renfield movie plot?
The Renfield plot centres on the titular servant of Dracula trying to get away from his vampiric master. This is tricky, and the struggle leads to much entertaining calamity.
The official synopsis reads: “In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his co-dependency.”
The story was pitched by comic book writer Robert Kirkman. Kirkman is best known as the creator of the comic book horror series The Walking Dead, and has said that Renfield “a story about him being Dracula’s henchman and how shitty a job that is.” He has also said that the movie will be “a fun, extremely violent comedy”, so expect plenty of laughs along with the frights.
Is there a Renfield movie trailer?
The Renfield movie trailer was released in January 2023. It gives us the premise of Hoult’s Renfield becoming tired of serving a mysterious overlord who’s eventually revealed by none other than Count Dracula, played by Nicolas Cage.
Cage’s reveal is the cherry on a very comedic, campy cake. The film seems almost like a superhero movie, as Renfield uses special powers to hunt for his dark master. Good fun!
