Knives Out 3 release date speculation, cast, plot, and more news

The Knives Out 3 release date will see Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig team up yet again with a whole new ensemble cast for the Netflix movie mystery series.

When is the Knives Out 3 release date? Back in March 2021, streaming service giant Netflix closed a deal worth more than $400 million, which promised not only a Knives Out 2 but a Knives Out 3.

Naturally, Knives Out 2 was a huge success, with the detective movie quickly becoming one of the best Netflix movies of all time, as well as being critically acclaimed. The good news is, we don’t have to wait around to see if Knives Out 3 will be greenlit or not — that’s already been confirmed — so let’s dive right in and see what the score is with the Knives Out 3 release date, plot, cast and more.

Knives Out 3 release date speculation

Knives Out 3 is all confirmed, and we think it’ll be released sometime in 2025 on Netflix.

The Knives Out series has produced some of the best movies for murder mystery fans, so we’ve had our eye on this one for a while. Thankfully, Johnson gave fans an update in October 2023, confirming that development for the third movie was officially starting.

“It’s coming along. I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing,” he says (via The Wrap). Hey, that kind of sounds like what we say when someone asks about a project we haven’t started yet!

But in all seriousness, we trust Johnson. If the project is officially starting development now, then we estimate there will be the best part of a year needed to write the script and go full throttle into pre-production.

Give or take another year for shooting, and we think we’ll be looking at a 2025 release. Given how both Knives Out and Glass Onion were released in the latter half of their respective years, we could even go so far as to expect a drop in the latter half of 2025.

Knives Out 3 cast speculation

The only Knives Out 3 cast member confirmed to be returning so far is Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc.

Fans have taken to social media to share their fan-castings, but it’s early days yet. We imagine that Knives Out 3 will continue the tradition of the first two films and Blanc will be joined by a fresh ensemble cast of A-Listers — and with Knives Out fever higher than ever, we anticipate that many of Hollywood’s greatest will be scrambling for a part in Rian Johnson’s next mystery.

We can also expect a vast array of celebrity cameos, and two figures who seem very likely to return for a third Knives Out movie are Hugh Grant, who plays Blanc’s partner Phillip, and Noah Segan, who will probably play a one-off character as he did in the last two films.

The expected Knives Out 3 cast list:

  • Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc
  • Hugh Grant as Phillip
  • Noah Segan as TBC

Who would we cast? Well, we’re glad you asked. There’s no limit to the famous faces we’d love to see in Knives Out 3, but our top picks would include the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Stanley Tucci, Steven Yeun, or Keke Palmer. …As you can tell, we’ve been thinking about this.

What’s Knives Out 3 about?

Based on what Johnson has said about the project, we know that Knives Out 3 is likely to return to America and get wrapped up in a whole new mystery there.

It’s incredibly early days, so there’s no confirmed Knives Out 3 plot just yet. (He hasn’t even written the “damn thing” yet, remember?) However, from Johnson’s interview with Insider, we know that the film will take place somewhere in the US.

“I want it to be in America,” he said. “There’s a lot of tempting things of going to — Paris or the Alps — but I feel it’s really important that these are American movies. Even with Glass Onion, it’s set overseas, but it’s a group of Americans who are trapped on an island together, so bringing it back to somewhere a little closer to home, I think, could be a good thing for the next one.”

Johnson has also said that Knives Out 3 will be “tonally and thematically different” from the first two movies.

Like a good detective, we can take a look at the clues (what’s already been covered) to come up with a suspect (the potential plot). Knives Out focused on family, and Glass Onion on friends. So with that in mind, perhaps Knives Out 3 would turn its attention to murder in a corporate setting. Or perhaps a hotel? Maybe we’re venturing into White Lotus territory here…

What will Knives Out 3 be called?

Rian Johnson’s been dropping a few hints online that he wants to change the series name from Knives Out to ‘A Benoit Blanc Mystery’.

“The thing is, though, I totally get it. It’s not like this was done against my will or something. I completely understand it,” he told Filmcast (referring to the ‘Knives Out’ subtitle in Glass Onion). “Because after the first movie, I think people knew that they liked Knives Out [but] they didn’t necessarily know it well enough to know who Benoit Blanc was.”

“But also, it kills me a little bit, and I want to see how quickly we can lose that subtitle,” he continued. “As soon as we can get past those and get to ‘A Benoit Blanc Mystery’ … and I will say, with this one, with the reach of Netflix and just how many more people I feel like have seen it and how much more it feels like it’s actually in the culture, we’re at least getting closer to being able to get away with ‘A Benoit Blanc Mystery’, and people would know what we’re talking about.”

Is there a Knives Out 3 trailer?

We think that a Knives Out 3 trailer or first look will finally drop sometime in 2024, or early 2025 at the latest.

This is all if a late 2025 release date is on the cards. Of course, if things get moving, we could always expect a sneaky preview a little earlier, and we wouldn’t say no to that! In the meantime, you could always find out how these glorious whodunnits were put together with the behind-the-scenes video on Glass Onion below:
