DeVito wishes Schwarzenegger made Twins 2 instead of becoming Governor

According to Danny DeVito, Arnold Schwarzenegger's time would've been better spent making a Twins sequel than being Governor of California.

Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins

Over the years, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and Ivan Reitman tried to get a sequel to the hit 1988 comedy movie Twins going. Danny DeVito claims that one of the times would have been in the 2000s, but Schwarzenegger had other plans during that decade – the small matter of being Governor of California. Twins 2 almost happened again more recently, but Ivan Reitman’s death in 2022 has put an indefinite pause on those plans.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has reinvented himself many times during his career – from being a bodybuilder, to Hollywood’s biggest and best action movie star, to being a politician and businessman. Danny DeVito has also had his fingers in many pies – acting in TV comedy series and movies, directing some wonderful movies including Matilda, and recently going back to theater.

In a new interview in his Broadway dressing room, DeVito said that he wants to work with Billy Crystal again, and make Throw Papa From the Train. He added that he also wants to work with Schwarzenegger again, but it will probably not be related to one of the best comedy movies of the 80s, Twins, as Arnie missed his chance when he became Governor.

“Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and I want to work together. We missed Twins 2, because he became governor – which, he should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor. Now we have a little thing going, a little project that we’ve been chatting about.” DeVito added that it’s not Twins related; “it’s just two friends, two guys, because we have a good time together. We complement each other in a lot of ways. I am way stronger than he is,” he told GQ.

Regardless of the merits (or otherwise) of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s tenure as Governor of California, I think we can all agree with Danny DeVito that his time would have been better spent making a sequel to one of the best 80s movies – Twins. The high-concept comedy movie sees a genetics experiment result in (ahem, non-identical) twins being born to six fathers. They are unaware of one another’s existence until they’re both 35-years-old.

DeVito’s character Vincent is a petty criminal and Schwarzenegger’s Julius is a naïve giant who has been raised in isolation. The movie becomes a mismatched buddy road-trip comedy, with the twins trying to keep one step ahead of various dangerous men. They also track down their long-lost mother.

Since leaving the post of Governor, Schwarzenegger has resumed his action duties in the likes of The Expendables franchise. He also reprised his most famous role in the most recent Terminator movies in order – Genisys and Dark Fate. Schwarzenegger has also recently turned to television with the Netflix series FUBAR and a Netflix documentary.
