When is The Meg 2 release date? When you have Jason Statham fighting a 70-foot shark, you’re going to get a pretty fun movie. With 2018’s The Meg, Warner Bros not only made an entertaining blockbuster movie, they also created a money-making machine. With a worldwide gross of over $530 million against a $130 million budget, it was inevitable we would get a sequel, and we’re sure you’re all super excited for The Meg 2: The Trench.
The Meg 2 will be directed by British filmmaker Ben Wheatley, who is more renowned for his work in quirky independent films than shark movies. It’s a bit of a left-field and fascinating choice to give this disaster movie to him, but one we are very much in support of.
The first movie was a tongue-in-cheek action movie with questionable science and schlocky set-pieces, which peaked with Jason Statham punching a shark on the nose. Pure cinema, right? The Meg 2 release date is set for August 4, 2023.
The monster movie sequel started filming in London in January 2022, so the beach ball is well and truly rolling. The footage is presumably in the editing room as we speak, since the status of the project on IMDb was changed to ‘post-production’.
The Meg 2 plot speculation
As of March 2023, no details have been confirmed about The Meg 2 plot. Judging by the first movie, we’re set for lots of fun again and we’re hoping Ben Wheatley ramps up the crazy for this sequel.
The director has quite an impressive filmography, laced with dark humour and horror movie elements, and with The Meg 2 diving into The Trench, we’re expecting some pretty scary scenes. Wheatley, however, isn’t sure if the movie will receive an R-rating.
Statham’s other franchise: Fast and Furious movies in order
No plot details have actually been released at this point, so we have to use our imagination in the meantime. We know Jason Statham will undoubtedly deliver another typically charming, energetic, and badass performance as Jonas Taylor as we see him enter the water for round 2 with his super-sized nemesis.
Why he has to take on the megalodon again and whether the titular beast will be the only monster Statham encounters remains to be seen. But, with the many unknown mysteries of the ocean, we’re sure there are plenty of fearsome foes waiting for him down there.
The Meg 2 cast
The Meg 2 cast will see the main man himself Jason Statham reprise his role as Jonas Taylor. Let’s face it, aside from the huge shark, we’re all invested in this sequel for Stath and Stath only.
Alongside him, we will see supporting cast members Cliff Curtis, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy reprise their roles as Mac, Meiying, and DJ, respectively.
Joining the cast are new additions Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Chinese superstar Jing Wu, and Ray Strachan, who all have currently unknown roles. In an interview with The Digital Fix, Guillory described The Meg 2 as “unbelievably exciting,” which bodes well for this shark sequel.
Action hero: The best Dwayne Johnson movies
It remains to be seen whether Ruby Rose will return for The Meg 2. There has been no confirmation yet, but Rose is certainly the biggest name missing from the cast list for the sequel to the thriller movie, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see her back in the role of Jaxx.
Sadly, there is still no news regarding the future of Pippin, the adorable pooch who seemingly escaped the clutches of death in The Meg. Although she was presumed dead earlier in the film, she was spotted again, alive and well, at the end of the first movie. We sincerely hope we get to see more of her escapades in The Meg 2.

Will The Meg 3 happen?
As of March 2023, there has been no talk of The Meg 3 and we think it’s very likely the franchise will end with The Meg 2. The main reason being, we can’t imagine there’s much more story to explore in this world.
However, if The Meg 2 has a decent box office showing once again like the first movie, there’s every chance the studio will push for more. So, if you want The Meg 3, get to the cinema and show up for the shark.
