Doctor Who Spoiler Free Preview For Under The Lake

An episode that will be too scary for adults, let alone the kids…

The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar certainly set the bar high for Doctor Who nine, with the regular two-part episode format establishing a shake up of the standard series formula. But given the success of these opening episodes, the stakes will be even higher for the follow up two-parter to deliver.

Judging by the first episode Under The Lake, Toby Whitehouse’s next two-parter lives up to that standard. Harking back to the ‘base under siege’ stories of the Patrick Troughton era, the third episode of series nine is wonderful tense, wonderfully creepy and sure to have kids hiding their eyes through their fingers if not behind the sofa.

In fact, my only concern is how scary it is; Under The Lake is a proper ghost story. Steven Moffat previously referred to episodes three and four as a “brilliantly creepy two-parter by Toby Whithouse … one of our scariest adventures yet!” Is that all bravado to get people watching? Absolutely but it very true too.

It’s an episode I’m hesitant to let my kids watch and the younger ones will be terrified so a word of warning there. It is being broadcast after 8.00pm next Saturday, take of it what you will.

As for the cast, they are great, not a dud performance in sight. Toby Whitehouse brings back one of his recurring Being Human cast members and there are definitely a few chills reminiscent of that show. And together again after the opening two-parter kept them largely apart, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are electric together as the Doctor and Clara, even if that thirst for adventure is starting to bring out some worrying emotional traits we saw in the companion last series.

It has a good cliff-hanger too. If they’re all like this in series nine, then 2015 is sure to have fans of Doctor Who on tender hooks!
