UPDATED: Is Twin Peaks' return in jeopardy?
New Update: 17/03/2015...
After the internet went mad yesterday over the rumours of Twin Peaks not happening, Entertainment Weekly contacted a source at Showtime, who made the following statement:
“Nothing is going on that’s any more than any preproduction process with David Lynch. Everything is moving forward and everybody is crazy thrilled and excited.”
So not a definitive refute, but a step in the positive direction. Fingers crossed...
This is one piece of TV news that we really don't want to report; Twin Peaks might not be returning to our screens in 2016 after all.
During a Between Two Worlds exhibition in Brisbane series creator David Lynch was asked whether Twin Peaks was definitely happening. To the shock of many, Lynch responded with “I don’t know. There are complications.”.
Now this doesn't appear to an issue with Showtime, who picked up the resurrected Twin Peaks with Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost on full creative duties. Whether this has something to do with the rights belonging to ABC, who original broadcast the show, or any of the cast, despite their eagerness to return to the show, is another matter. Series lead Kyle MacLachlan, aka Dale Cooper, has been attached for a while and after four years many of the scripts are apparently written. But, depending on cast negotiations, these would likely subject to change.
Further rumours suggest that it might be Lynch himself who is the centre of these 'complications. Since the Brisbane announcement he has gone on to state “I haven’t returned yet and we’re still working on the contract, but I love the world of Twin Peaks and I love those characters. And I think it will be very special to go back into that world.”.
Let's hope that these issues can be resolved and Twin Peaks can get back on track. No speculated 2016 air date has been given yet; if there were delays, I think fans would be happy with this over an abrupt end to production. Fingers crossed Lynch, Frost, MacLachlan and many of the original cast will be back sooner or later.
