The Lord of the Rings TV series casts its villain as Joseph Mawle joins the show

With production on Amazon's epic The Lord of the Rings prequel series due to begin in New Zealand in the coming months,  another key character has been cast. According to Deadline, Joseph Mawle, best known as Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones, has been cast as the show's villain.

Details about the show are suitably vague at this point. Beyond its Second Age setting (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were set in the Third Age), we know that Mawle will play someone called Oren, opposite heroes Beldor (Will Poulter) and Tyra (Markella Kavenagh). The site has also reported that Maxim Baldry has joined the cast, although it is unclear what role he will play.

The Lord of the Rings prequel is being developed by showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay with (J.A.) Bayona directing and executive producing. More news as it unfolds...
