Prepare for Fire & Blood…
Hot off the heels of the news that Jane Goldman’s Game of Thrones prequel series starring Naomi Watts has been dropped, HBO has give a straight to series order for a second spin-off, centred around the Targaryen dynasty.
House of the Dragon has been given a 10-episode order. The spin-off has been developed by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal and is based around Martin’s Fire & Blood book, set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will partner as showrunners, with Sapochnik also directing the pilot episode. Martin and Vince Gerardis will also serve as executive producers. House of the Dragon is Sapochnik’s first project as part of an HBO overall deal where he will develop and produce content for HBO and HBO Max.
HBO Programming President Casey Bloys made the statement when he announced the series at WarnerMedia Day.
“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories. We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”
Deadline has reported that the Dance of Dragons civil war alluded to in the blockbuster Game of Thrones TV series and books may make up a significant part of this prequel’s story line.
