Star Trek: Discovery casts James Frain as Sarek but faces another delay

With production finally about to begin on Star Trek: Discovery next week, the show has made another casting announcement; James Frain will be playing Sarek, Spock's Vulcan father who was played by Mark Leonard in the original Star Trek TV series and movies. He joins Anthony Rapp, Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo and Sonequa Martin-Green as the show's lead.

However, Variety has reported that further delays have impacted the series, which saw the departure of showrunner Bryan Fuller last year and it will now miss its planned May debut.

CBS released the following statement:

"Production on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created. This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show. We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows." - CBS

The one positive is that CBS is not rushing the show through, taking the time to get it right. When Star Trek: Discovery finally airs, Netflix will broadcast new episodes a day after the US.

More news, including a new planned air date as we have it.
