Star Trek: Discovery casts Anson Mount as Captain Pike for season two

The infamous USS Enterprise made its debut in the closing moments of Star Trek: Discovery's first season and it seems we'll be seeing more of the ship in season two. Variety has confirmed that Anson Mount will play the ship's second captain, Christopher Pike.

Mount was recently on TV screens playing Black Bolt in the awful Inhumans (it was our worst-reviewed show of 2017) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe television spin-off is unlikely to gain a second season. The casting of Mount in Star Trek: Discovery certainly seems to support that notion.

Pike was previously played by Jeffrey Hunter in the original, unused Star Trek pilot The Cage (whose events were repurposed in the two-part episode The Menagerie). That story also saw Sean Kenney played an older, dilapidated version, while the role was previously recast for the reboot prequel movies, with Bruce Greenwood playing the role.

Of course, while the Enterprise will appear in season two, the series will remain focused on the USS Discovery, as the show's  executive producer Alex Kurtzman explained when talking to Variety about the Enterprise's important role in season two.

“The show is called ‘Discovery.’ It’s not ‘Enterprise. So yes, the Enterprise will play a part of Season 2 but it will absolutely not overshadow Discovery. And I think with Enterprise’s arrival in the finale we recognize that the audience has a lot of questions about our synchronicity with the original series, which really means or synchronicity with canon.”

The second series will also introduce nefarious secret organisation Section 31, first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and appearing again in Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek Into Darkness. Alan Van Sprang played a Section 31 operative in a cut scene from the season one finale Will You Take My Hand?, attempting to recruit Michelle Yeoh's alternate Phillipa Georgiou and has confirmed he will be back in season two.
"I know it's going to be a massive part of it, but I honestly... and it's not like I'm holding any secrets, like Jason Isaacs sitting here saying, 'Oh I knew who I was, and what I was doing,' no, I really have no idea. But I'm definitely a big part of season 2."

More news on the hotly anticipated Star Trek: Discovery's second season as we have it.
