Segun Akinola replacing Murray Gold as composer for Doctor Who series 11

It's a complete change of the guard for the upcoming Doctor Who series 11, with composer Murray Gold announcing that he too would be leaving the show. Gold has been scoring the music for Doctor Who since it returned it 2005 and now his successor has been confirmed.

BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Segun Akinola will score the music for season 11, including a new, fresh take on the main theme tune.

Akinola made the following statement regarding his appointment as Doctor Who composer:

"Doctor Who is woven into the fabric of British culture and recognised globally. I am absolutely thrilled to be given the privilege of working on such a beloved series and to bring my musical voice to it."

New showrunner Chris Chibnall also made a statement regarding Akinola's role:
"Welcome to the Doctor Who family, Segun Akinola! We're over the moon Segun's agreed to join us, to provide the score for the next phase of the Doctor Who adventure.

"From our very first conversations, it was obvious Segun was a passionate, collaborative and delightful human being as well as a fantastic and bold composer. We'reking forward to introducing the world to his exciting and emotional soundtracks for the Thirteenth Doctor."

Doctor Who will return for 10 new episodes with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. A final airdate has not been confirmed (and rumours of the first trailer have stayed just that - rumours) but it is expected to debut this October.
