Ripper Street renewed for second series by BBC!

Just a quick news burst to pass on a Media Guardian report that Ripper Street, the BBC's weird merger of modern police drama and cor-blimey Jack The Ripper melodrama, has been confirmed for a second series in 2014.

Yes, the first episode sucked, but there have been major improvements in quality of drama since then, even an improvement in the on-screen female presence, and the high quality of the acting from Matthew Macfadyen and co has carried us through some of the darker times.

BBC drama commissioning controller Ben Stephenson says: "Quality and ambition run through Ripper Street, from Richard Warlow's original scripts, the incredible cast and the captivating direction, all combine to create a period series with a modern and gripping edge that will return for a second series in 2014."

So, now we know it's coming back, we can belt up happily for the final three episodes. Will Jack The Ripper return? How could he not?

If you've not been watching Ripper Street, the whole run is still up on iPlayer.
