Peter Capaldi is Doctor No. 12
Peter Capaldi has been announced as the new star of Doctor Who - taking over the role fro Matt Smith in this year's Christmas special.
Capaldi, the first Oscar winner to take on the part, is the same age William Hartnell was when he appeared as the Doctor in An Unearthly Child - marking a clear change of tone and style from the Matt Smith era. Capaldi has also appeared in Doctor Who before - in the 2008 episode The Fires of Pompeii (which also featured Karen Gillan before she was cast as Amy Pond); he also appeared in Torchwood's only really highly acclaimed story, Children of Earth. He is also a life-long fan of the series having written in to the Radio Times during the show's TENTH anniversary celebrations!
Outside of his contributions to the Who universe, he's best known for his expletive-laden performance as Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It and the later film In The Loop.
Capaldi's casting is great news to us - he brings a whole new gravitas to a character and should signal a big change in his first full series next year. We're really looking forward to the results...
