No Angels but Plenty of Demons

After their recent collaboration in Torchwood: Miracle Day, BBC Worldwide and American cable channel Starz are to create a fantasy drama called Da Vinci’s Demons. It is to be written by screenwriter David Goyer whose previous credits include the films Man of Steel, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The eight-episode series will be set in 15th Century Renaissance France following the life of a young Leonardo Da Vinci. It has been billed as the "untold" history of the young Italian’s early life as a free thinker and the struggling against the intellectual confines of his time.

The writer, David Goyer, said about the character of Da Vinci:

"Da Vinci was the original Renaissance man - a near-mythic figure that has worldwide appeal. After working with characters like Batman and Superman, it made a strange kind of sense for me to dive into the facts and legends swirling around his origins."

He also added that the show will be “as dark and challenging and irreverent as it deserves to be".

Starz media managing director Carmi Zlotnick said that:

"David has re-imagined some of the most iconic superheroes of all time, and is again building an extraordinary prism through which to rediscover the world’s greatest genius and most mysterious man,"

“This is a story we believe will captivate the imaginations of audiences around the world and is the first of what we expect to be many productions with our talented partners at BBC Worldwide Productions."

Production of Da Vinci’s Demons is expected to start early next with a broadcast on Starz in 2013. Familiar faces of producers Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner from Doctor Who and Torchwood will oversee the series as executive producers.
