Netflix renews The Umbrella Academy for a second season

Streaming giant Netflix released superhero comic adaptation The Umbrella Academy to critical success this year and fans have been eager to find out if there will be any resolution to that dramatic finale cliffhanger. Fortunately that wasn't the end of the show, as Netflix confirms it has picked up the show for a second season.

The show will return for ten more episode, with production beginning this summer in Toronto. Stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin H. Min are all expected to return.

The Umbrella Academy was created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá for Dark Horse Comics. It centres around a group of seven children, born on the same day in 1989 as 36 others, to mothers who weren't even pregnant when the day began. Recruited by a mysterious billionaire, the children were trained as heroes and must now reunite as adults stop the apocalypse.

Steve Blackman will return as showrunner for season two, which will likely air in 2020. The first season is available to view on Netflix here.
