Matt Smith to step down as Doctor Who
There were rumblings online tonight of some big Doctor Who news, and looks like we got it: Matt Smith is stepping down after the 2013 Christmas special, as confirmed by the Daily Telegraph.
There had been wonderings about Smith's future after recent split series and such - mathematically speaking, he has now done as many full series as his predecessor David Tennant. Three full years is often the most you see from a lead actor on British TV - perhaps we just don't have the money to throw at them.
Nonetheless, Smith has given us a lot of great stories - in fact, we counted down our Top Eleven Matt Smith episodes not long ago - and even in the weaker weeks, his performance was rarely the problem. Great, charismatic work in the part, and he'll be missed.
Both Jenna-Louise Coleman (aka companion Clara) and Steven Moffat sound like they're staying on according to that Daily Telegraph article, so now the question becomes - who is the next Doctor? And, if John Hurt really is now taking up one of the Doctor's thirteen regenerations, does that make the next one... the last?
