Matt Smith confirms Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special!

Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, Matt Smith dropped a few hints about the 2012 series of Doctor Who. With continuing speculation about the air date and number of episodes to be screened next year, we now know exactly what will be going into production next February.

Smith confirmed that there will be a full 7th series of the rebooted show along with the now-expected Christmas special. He also confirmed that this block of production will include the 50th Anniversary special which will be aired in 2013 to mark the show's half-centenary.

There had been speculation that we'd see a mini-series in 2013 to mark the anniversary, but now it sounds like a singular special episode. Even more than ever, this calls into question the number of episodes we can expect - not only in 2012, but also the following year. Our money is still on a full 13 episode series next year capped, as usual, with the Christmas special and followed around Easter with the 50th Anniversary special. Could this be Matt Smith's final outing? Could this mean that 2013 will be dedicated to the production of a NEW Doctor series to be aired in 2014? Still so many questions!
