Josh Whitehouse and Naomi Watts join Game of Thrones prequel series The Long Night

This week, the first casting announcements for HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series have been announced.

First up is Naomi Watts, who will play a central role in the prequel series, set 1,000 years before the current show. Very little is known about the role, except that she'll be playing 'a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret'.

Following that casting announcement is Josh Whitehouse; details of his role have been kept under wraps for now.

Jane Goldman will be overseeing the show - the first of a potential five Game of Thrones series for HBO, with George RR Martin, who penned the A Song of Ice And Fire novels on which the main show is based, supporting Goldman in the development of the series. The show also has an series title, The Long Night, which will give fans clues as to what it might be about.

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will air in 2019. In the meantime, you can check out our twice-weekly revisits of the first seven seasons at out Game of Thrones page here.
