Doctor Who series 10: Three new writers announced and Matt Lucas to return

With production finally getting underway for Doctor Who series 10, we're finally starting to get some details on what we can expect when the show returns next year. We already know that Steven Moffat will be writing four episodes of the 12-episodes series 10 (plus the 2016 and 2017 Christmas specials) and joining him will be Mark Gatiss (possibly writing a sequel to series nine's [disappointing] Sleep No More. Now the BBC have announced the writers for episodes two to four.

Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who penned series eight's In The Forest Of The Night will be writing the second episode, while Sarah Dollard, who wrote series nine's excellent Fear The Raven will be on scripting duties for episode three. The fourth episode will be penned by new Doctor Who writer Mike Bartlett (who recently scripted BBC's critically well received Doctor Foster). Moffat will be writing the first episode of course, which will presumably be the introduction of Pearl Mackie's new companion Bill.

Doctor Who series nine will also be featuring some returning guest stars. Michelle Gomez has already announced that she'll make at least one further appearance as Missy and now the BBC have confirmed that Matt Lucas, who played Nardole in the 2015 Christmas special The Husbands Of River Song, will be returning to the show.

Nardole was last seen turned into one of the rotating heads of King Hydroflax's robot but there is no news yet on how he might return. Lucas made the following statement...

"I’m chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the TARDIS for some more adventures. I loved acting with Peter and I’m excited to work with Pearl [Mackie, who plays the new companion Bill]." - BBC

Steven Moffat also elaborated, suggesting that Nardole may appear more than once in the upcoming tenth series.

"Delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the TARDIS - and this time it’s not just for Christmas, he’s sticking around. One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space." - BBC

Finally, Stephanie Hyam, who appeared in Moffat (and Gatiss's) Sherlock special The Abominable Bride will also been appearing in a guest role, no it is not clear what episode she might appear in.

And finally to wet your appetite for new Doctor Who, here's the first picture from Pearl Mackie's first readthrough with Peter Capaldi before filming begins on Monday...

We'll continue to bring more news on the upcoming series 10 of Doctor Who as we have it...
