Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker confirmed as the Thirteenth Doctor

Peter Capaldi's successor has just been announced. Jodie Whittaker will be taking up the role of the Thirteenth Doctor when Chris Chibnall takes over the reigns for Doctor Who series 11 in 2018. Whittaker of course worked with Chibnall on Broadchurch and will be the first woman to play the Doctor.

As with previous Doctor Who casting announcements, rumours about who will be playing the new Doctor have run rampant with everyone from Kris Marshall to Tilda Swinton under fan and tabloid consideration. With Michelle Gomez playing Missy, the first female Master under Moffat's reign, talk of the first female Doctor has been more prolific than ever. But it will be interesting to see how fans react to this change of format.

Whittaker told the BBC...

“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”

Incoming showrunner Chibnall added...
“After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we’re excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.

I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away.  Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way.”

Capaldi of course will bow out of the series in this year's Christmas special, which will see him unite with David Bradley's take on the First Doctor. It will also be Steven Moffat's final episode of Doctor Who as showrunner.

We'll be bringing more thoughts on this casting shortly.
