Death of a Doctor?

The first promotional image from the 2013 Christmas Special of Doctor Who has been released. Click on the image below for an ultra-high resolution version of the image. If you look closely, that fire between The Doctor and Clara looks like it might be hiding a face - we reckon it's Peter Capaldi, but others can see hints of Paul McGann in there too. Either way, it's clearly a hint!

In addition, the BBC have also given us a synopsis...

Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. "Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.
What else do we know? The episode is called Time of the Doctor and makes up the third part of a trilogy that documents the final adventures of Matt Smith's incarnation. We also now know that Matt's Doctor is actually the FINAL regeneration of the character going on the thirteen regenerations limit established in The Deadly Assassin so the episode doesn't just deal with a usual regeneration (if you're counting, we have Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, Davison, Baker, McCoy, McGann, Hurt, Eccleston, Tennant, Tennant and Smith - yes TWO tennants thanks to him regenerating into his OWN body in Journey's End).

The episode will reveal who or what the Silence are and will also finally explain the crack in Amy's bedroom wall...

There are more detailed spoilers floating around - whether or not they're true we don't know but we recommend avoiding them all the same.
