The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that Alex Kurtzman is to develop a new Star Trek TV series for CBS. While details are thin on the ground, it is expected that an announcement will be made this month.

This makes a lot of sense given the popularity of the franchise is at a high following the successful film reboots helmed by J.J. Abrams. The third rebooted Star Trek film is expected in cinemas in 2016, directed by Justin Lin.

Star Trek has had five long-running TV series since it first appeared in 1966 - the original series staring William Shatner and the late Leonard Nimoy was created by Gene Roddenberry who then went on to create Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. This was followed by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise. There have been twelve films released to date.

That had been rumours that Netflix was approached to develop a series, but this doesn't appear to be related to the current rumours.

2016 is the 50th Anniversary of the franchise so a new TV series does make a lot of sense.
