Alex Kurtzman signs deal to develop more Star Trek shows for CBS; Next Generation sequel series rumoured to feature Picard

Despite a number behind the scenes turmoil, including the replacement of showrunners of both seasons, Star Trek: Discovery has been a great success for CBS. Now Alex Kurtzman, who was just confirmed to be stepping up as the showrunner, has inked a new deal with CBS to develop the franchise has confirmed.

The five-year deal will include new shows, limited series and even animated content. CBS Television Studios will gain exclusive rights to produce all television content created and developed by Kurtzman and his Secret Hideout production banner. Joining him on the venture will be Star Trek: Discovery producers Heather Kadin and Aaron Baiers.

The site has also confirmed that Kurtzman and Secret Hideout, in addition to growing CBS’ Star Trek universe, will develop new, original series across the full spectrum of broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. As part of this process, Secret Hideout will expand its production operation, adding diverse voices and cultivating new creative talent to align with the company.

Here's Kurztman's statement following the announcement:

“Heather, Aaron and I are thrilled to continue Secret Hideout’s amazing partnership with CBS Television Studios. Since our first collaboration with Hawaii Five-0 almost a decade ago, Les, David and the full team at CBS Studios have been our foremost collaborators and champions, treating each project with integrity, supporting the creative visions and working breathlessly to make each episode of every show the best it can be. CBS has also allowed us the great pleasure of reintroducing the world of Star Trek audiences new and old, and we are very excited to keep working alongside them to expand that world.”

Naturally the internet is abuzz with interest and rumours (many to be taken with a large pinch of sort until confirmation is given). Variety has reported that the potential new shows include:
  • A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo most recently developed The CW’s reboot of Dynasty and previously created shows like Gossip Girl and Hulu and Marvel’s Runaways.
  • A limited series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
  • A limited series based around the Wrath of Khan story. debuted in original series episode Space Seed and again in the film Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.
  • An animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.

But perhaps the most exciting rumour comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who have stated that one series possibly under development is a Star Trek: The Next Generation sequel series, with Patrick Stewart himself reprising his role as jean-Luc Picard.

CBS Television Studios have refused to comment on the potential series reported. The Picard-helmed series may be wishful thinking but it is an exciting time for the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek: Discovery really is just the beginning of the new phase of Star Trek on television...
