Hidden Gems - Digital Treasures, June 2016

These days we have access to so many amazing digital TV offerings, whether paid for like Netflix, Amazon Prime or NowTV; or free or advertising supported like BBC player, All 4 or the recently relaunched ITV Hub. With so much choice it can be hard to decide between all the offerings, there's sadly no cross-platform search or recommendation engine. So, here at The Digital Fix we've decided to unearth some of hidden gems of the streaming TV world, for your viewing pleasure. Every month we'll pick out the best, or most interesting, from what's new, old or obscure.

Amazon Instant

Hap & Leonard

James Purefoy, Michael Kenneth Williams and Christina Hendricks star in this swamp-noir, a a buddy movie and tragicomedy that has been surprising audiences. There's crime and Texan shenanigans, double-crossing hippies and crazy 80s psychos, what what makes this show really work are the eponymous heroes; scenes with the two of them in are wonderful. Frankly, we could watch a one hour show of just the two of them picking roses and bantering good-naturedly with each other.

Preacher has been a long time coming; an adaptation of Vertigo's seminal comic, fans waited with bated breath to see how the adaptation would look. Rest assured, Dominic Cooper is excellent as Reverend Jesse Custer, and I'd argue that the pilot episode does a better job of setting up the characters than the source material. But don't be put off if you aren't a fan of comic book adaptations, this dark supernatural noir is excellently shot and well acted and totally worth a watch. You can't binge watch it yet though, the episodes are being released a week at a time.

Did you enjoy Borgen? West Wing? The Wire? Then if you don't mind French subtitled political crime dramas, this show might well be for you. Gerard Depardieu is the embattled mayor of Marseille fighting against the predations of the local mafia.

iZombie is another comic book adaptation you might not have heard about. Rose McIver plays Liv, a promising doctor whose life takes a different turn when she is turned into a zombie while attending a boat party. To cope with her new appetite for brains, she eats the brains of murder victims whose bodies are delivered to the morgue, thereby giving her visions of their last moments, and a crime to solve. As macabre as this sounds, it's actually light and funny, an easy watch. There are two season on Netflix and a third on the way.

BBC iPlayer

Peaky Blinders Season 3

I know, I'm cheating, Peaky Blinders was on last week's list as well. But that was to catch up on season's one and two, so you'll be wanting the excellent third season now, right? Head on over to BBC iPlayer, it's a corker!
