iZombie: 5.04 Dot Zom

Liv and Clive investigate the death of Cornell Piercey, the head of a successful tech company in one of many storylines that weave their way through this intriguing episode of iZombie’s final season. Not only was Piercey working on an app that allows people to be identified and tracked easily but he had also sunk a lot of the company's profits into a hi-tec doomsday bunker where he planned to take a handpicked few to survive what he claimed was an upcoming apocalypse. Adding to the mystery is the fact that Peyton has been added to the list of bunker inhabitants. As is usual, Liv gets to eat Piercey’s brain which gives her a highly functioning intelligence, exactly what is required to help with the investigation.

Blaine and Don E make a welcome return this episode. Business at The Scratching Post is suffering due to constant surveillance by members of the “deadenders”, the anti-zombie group who are outing the undead on a website to spread dissent throughout Seattle. Al Bronson, one of several new characters introduced this episode, is a reporter who has come to write an article on Blaine. Blaine seems smitten and we get to see a softer side of the show's resident bad guy but by the end of the episode we are left with the definite impression that Al is working to a secret agenda.

We also get to see more of Ravi and Peyton’s plans to produce HiZombie, a TV show they hope will go viral and show people the truth about the undead. Script problems abound as their writer fails to grasp exactly what they are going for.

The most interesting part of this episode is the introduction of another new character “new boss” who appears to be being set up as a major villain for this final run of episodes. The two Fillmore Graves soldiers that were frozen last episode for killing some anti-zombie humans are revived in secret and brought before this mysterious and sinister newcomer and are told they now work for him.

Also throw into the mix a school teacher who is outed by the “deadenders” and sacked from his job. He is recruited by Major to teach the zombie orphans now living at Renegade’s secret headquarters but before he can start is apprehended by the new undercover Fillmore Graves soldiers and is now definitely being blackmailed and also working under a secret agenda.

There is certainly a lot going on in this episode of iZombie and it feels like all the pieces are being put into place as we head towards the show's finale. The anti-zombie sentiment is getting ramped up. Liv and Clive’s investigation reveals the algorithms being worked on by their murder victim are destined to be used by the “deadenders” to enhance their monitoring and exposure of the cities undead. With Al and “new boss” we get two brand new characters with nefarious  intentions. The latter is a particularly intriguing character who seems to have a weird drug dependency and a wig concealing a large metal plate covering his skull. He's a genuinely creepy character and a welcome addition to the show.

Lots of interesting questions are asked in Dot Zom with no real answers given. On one hand this does make the episode ultimately feel a little flat with it’s lack of resolution but it also leaves a lot of intriguing story elements to be explored further down the line. With potentially two new villains introduced quite late in the game, iZombie looks all set to bring things to a strong conclusion. If we get more of Blaine performing another samba backed Brazilian dance fight, then all the better.
