From Stargate to Dark Matter and back to Stargate: A chat with showrunner Joseph Mallozzi

Stargate in all its guises is one of my favourite franchises and I was thrilled to recently have a chance to interview one of the guiding lights of the TV series. Joseph Mallozzi joined Stargate: SG1 during its fourth season as part of a writing duo with Paul Mullie and later served as Executive Producer on Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe.

Hi Joseph. Was there ever a story you really wanted to do on Stargate but didn't get the opportunity?

Over the course of the 12+ years on Stargate, I got to tell pretty much every story I wanted to tell.  The great thing about the shows, particularly SG-1 and Atlantis, was the flexibility they allowed when it came to narrative.  I wrote everything from action-adventure to horror, fantasy to comic episodes.  Looking back, I think the only episode I wanted to write (outside of these: September 30, 2008: An AU Season 6!) was a time travel story that, in retrospect, was pretty damn convoluted and probably wouldn’t have worked anyway.  I got as far as the outline before scrapping (you can find it here).

While Stargate SG1 got a conclusion in the TV movies the Ark of Truth, Stargate Atlantis and Universe never had the same opportunity. Would you still want to revisit those series and provide closure or do you feel the ship has sailed?

If it was up to me, I’d love to go back and revisit all of those characters, check in with them, find out what they’ve been up to - O’Neill running Homeworld Command while Carter runs Stargate Command, seeing Daniel, Teal’c, Cameron, and Vala off on their off-world adventures; McKay and co. back in the Pegasus Galaxy battling the wraith; the crew of the Destiny waking up from stasis some ten years later...

Were you involved in web series Stargate Origins?

I wasn’t involved.  From what I understand, it’s a prequel to the original movie.

Can you tell us a bit about Stargate Rising, the idea behind the campaign and how it is going at the moment?

I’d heard rumblings that Stargate: Origins was going to be used as a litmus test to gauge fan appetite for a fourth Stargate series.  I wondered if there was an easier way for the fans to make themselves heard that didn’t necessary involve subscribing to a service, so I took a page out of our Dark Matter online campaign, had the same people (Tom, Hilda, Kelli, and Lance) spearhead the initiative, and got Stargate trending - in North America and worldwide, over 250k+ tweets.  Not bad for a show that’s been off the air for 7 years.

If the campaign is successful do you envisage a big screen feature or a TV show? Which format do you think works best for Stargate?

Definitely a fourth series under the direction of longtime Stargate co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper.

Do you think we will ever see SG1 on Blu-ray or at least in HD for the earlier seasons? Is it too of much a technical/financial challenge?

I honestly don’t know.  This is a question for MGM.

Are you still hoping to continue your recent series Dark Matter following its cancellation last year?

Yes.  I think we’ll have to give it some time but eventually, in the not too distant future, I’d love to have the opportunity to finish the story with a miniseries.

Can you tell us anything about what you are currently working on?

I’m presently working on various “development projects”, everything from anime to comic book to game and book adaptations.  I’m fairly close in a couple of these and hope to be in production on a new series by year’s end.

Thank you to Joseph for taking the time to talk to us at The Digital Fix, you can currently catch Dark Matter via SyFy on demand through all platforms that carry the service.
