Ricky Gervais' Derek commissioned for a full series

Ricky Gervais' comedy drama Derek will return in 2013, Channel 4 have announced today. After the pilot received a high rating 3 million viewers - the highest-rating scripted comedy the channel has received in 2 years -the controversal Derek will return for a full series.

The new series will be, again, written and directed by Ricky Gervais. It follows the story of Derek Noakes, a vulnerable man working in an old people's home. The series will star Gervais as Derek, with Karl Pilkington and Kerry Godliman supporting him as Derek's colleagues.

The pilot episode, which aired last month, received a mixed response from critics. Although Gervais was praised for his change in direction, he was also criticised for his portrayal as 'heavy-handed'; with an article in the Daily Mail calling Derek "vile, cynical and dishonest".

The head of comedy for Channel 4, Shane Allen said:

"Ricky is a leading voice in British comedy and, through Derek, he captures and reflects something of the spirit of modern society. The pilot triggered an amazing response and Derek's story had only just begun, so it's brilliant that we can explore this world and its beautifully drawn characters across a series. It feels like a perfect new direction for Ricky."

Ricky Gervais commented:

"David Brent was an egotistical, failed musician and the most annoying man in the world. Derek is a 50-year-old man with bad hair and clothes, whose best friend is a whinging, bald Manc twonk. Where do I get my ideas from?"
