Dara O'Briain at the helm for BAFTA Television Awards

Comedian Dara O’Briain has been confirmed as the host for the 2012 BAFTA Television Awards. O’Briain is replacing last year’s host, fellow Irishman Graham Norton, who will be covering the Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan.

He said: "I'm delighted and honoured to be taking the reins at this year's British Academy Television Awards, in the prestigious role as the person who introduces the people who read out the winners of the awards."

The comedian added: "And if Adele wins anything, I promise I'll leave her well alone, no matter what time it is," in reference to ITV’s decision to cut her off during an acceptance speech at the recent Brit Awards.

The chief executive of BAFTA, Amanda Berry commented: "Dara is a fantastic supporter of BAFTA, and I know he will do a terrific job of hosting the Television Awards.

"The ceremony showcases the very best television programmes and performances of the last year, and with Dara at the helm I am sure it will be a truly wonderful event."

O’Briain has had recent experience in hosting awards ceremonies after he hosted the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards on March 16th. This year’s BAFTA Television Awards will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 27th, and it will air on BBC One.
