CBS's Elementary pilot casts Lucy Liu as "Joan Watson"

As we reported a few months back, US network CBS are taking their own stab at a modern-day Sherlock Holmes with new pilot Elementary, with Jonny Lee Miller in the lead.

New details have now emerged, via Deadline, regarding the new pilot, most interestingly that Lucy Liu (of Ally McBeal and Charlie's Angels fame) will be playing Joan Watson, a renamed and gender-reassigned version of the John Watson character.

Other plot details have also emerged in the same report: Miller's Holmes will be British still, formerly a consultant for Scotland Yard, but ending up in a New York rehab centre due to his addiction problems. He then ends up sharing a Brooklyn house with Joan Watson, a former surgeon who's lost her licence.

Comparisons have inevitably been drawn with the BBC's Sherlock, and we'll have to wait and see if the two shows can co-exist. Indeed, for now the US version is only a pilot, so first we need to find out if there will even be a series. Stay tuned for more on Elementary, and let us know below whether you think there's room for two men calling themselves "Sherlock Holmes" on TV.
