We Recommend: Spartacus - Vengeance
Tonight, on Sky One at 10 PM, I AM SPARTACUS. Well, not really. But the second season of Starz’ wonderful swords ‘n’ sandals ‘n’ blood ‘n’ sex epic hits UK TV screens.
Spartacus: Vengeance is the long awaited true follow-on from 2010’s spectacular hit, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Although we did get a fix in 2011, with Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, that was a prequel and didn’t in fact have anyone called Spartacus in it.
The reason for that, sadly, was the (at the time) ongoing battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma that Spartacus himself was undergoing. Although the producers recast and went ahead with this new series whilst Andy Whitfield was still with us, he sadly passed away last September.
So what can we expect from Spartacus: Vengeance? An awful lot. We get to see the new man - Liam McIntyre - as Spartacus in action for the first time proper (after the various trailers teasing us in 2011). Can he match the fantastic portrayal of the late Andy Whitfield? What has happened to Lucretia now everything has seemingly been taken away from her after the murder of her husband by the escaping Gladiators and slaves? Will she have gone crazy, or can she enact some kind of revenge? How much favour does she still have with Ilythia and her husband, Glaber, given what she knows (Ilythia is a murderess)? What will the Gladiators and slaves do now they are free? Will they separate, band together, bring the downfall of Rome or something else entirely? Of course, the show to date has been based on history and legend but that doesn’t mean the writers will be unwilling to mould their own course of history from now on.
Whatever happens plot-wise we can be assured the style will not change. There will be violence. There will be blood. There will be sex. For the next ten weeks we’ll all be glued to our screens watching the fate of Rome unfold in front of us.
