Blackadder writers to return to TV with new comedy
Blackadder writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton are to return to TV with a new comedy. The two last collaborated on the special Blackadder: Back and Forth in 2000.
Curtis and Elton met when after the first series of Blackadder received a lukewarm reception, Elton was brought in to give the sitcom a different feel; the first series was written by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson, who starred as the lead. Its last full series was broadcast in 1989, with a couple of specials culminating in the Millennium special.
Since their time on Blackadder, Richard Curtis has forged a successful film career with titles such as Love Actually and the Bridget Jones films. His latest outing was co-writing the Steven Spielberg film, War Horse. Ben Elton has written numerous books and musicals including the Phantom of the Opera sequel Love Never Dies and the hugely popular Queen musical We Will Rock You.
Ben Elton revealed to The Telegraph earlier this month:
"I've just started working on a new project with Richard. It's been a long time since we worked together so it is fun."
Rumours of a fifth series of Blackadder have persisted over the years. Ideas have been mooted for settings such as the pre-historic period or the Swinging Sixties. Elton, however, has quashed these rumours:
"It is so lovely that everyone wants it back that it's almost a shame to do it and ruin that. The new stuff will be original, but I can't reveal any more than that."
