We Recommend: Sons of Anarchy

Set in the fictional town of Charming, California, Sons of Anarchy is a drama based around the lives of members of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original). While this includes wild motorbike chases, lots of black leather and male posturing and less than legal activities, it also stretches to some deep emotion and political scheming. Even though the fourth season is about to start on 5USA, it’s not too late to start watching a gripping show with plenty to recommend it.

Written by showrunner Kurt Sutter (who also worked on The Shield), Sons of Anarchy takes much inspiration from Hamlet with the central characters all having clear counterparts in the Shakespearean drama. Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) is President of SAMCRO and stepfather to Vice-President Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam), having married Jax’s mum Gemma (Katie Segal) after her former husband died. The relationship between Clay and Jax has been a bit of a rollercoaster, as they have very different ideas about the future of the club – exacerbated by Jax having found some of his father’s writings on the issue. Jax’s love interest, Tara (Maggie Siff) is a surgeon, who has known Jax since childhood, but is not wholly part of the motorbike club scene. The rest of the club members are like an extended family with deep friendships, petty squabbles and the closeness that comes with knowing one another incredibly well. Citizens of Charming such as law enforcement and local businessmen also play a part in the overall drama.

SAMCRO has always been involved in gun-running as a major source of income, hidden behind the façade of running a successful garage. With the personal conflicts between Clay, Jax and other members of the club, the illegal activities also draw certain pressure from other groups and factions and the club has to steer their way through all these pressures and try and come out on top.

Season 4 starts after a 14 month time gap after the concluding act of Season 3, and because of that, there’s a fair bit of flashback to establish the storylines again. Though fans of the show will have been waiting for this return eagerly, it’s also not a bad point to jump into the action purely because a lot is explained right from the start. It’s a season with a lot of pressure on the club internally, from the law and as they attempt to establish new lines of ‘business’. Though I was sceptical about whether I’d enjoy a ‘motorbike’ show, it’s quickly become the show I look forward to the most when it’s on air.

Season 4 of Sons of Anarchy starts on 5USA tonight, Wednesday 18th January at 10pm.
