MasterChef is back for an eighth series

BBC cooking show MasterChef is set to return for an eighth series. John Torode and Gregg Wallace are back on the popular BBC One show judging the best cook from thousands of applicants. The eighth series will be returning with a slightly different format.

Amateur chefs, who were selected to participate in the TV stages of the competition, were invited to cook a dish for judges John and Gregg in the MasterChef dining room. After blind testing, the judges choose 24 chefs to go through to the first heats.

From the 24 chosen chefs, only 12 will don the famous MasterChef apron. In the heats, the contestants will be involved in the Invention Test which judges their ability to use different ingredients ranging from surf clams to rabbit to rump steak.

After the Invention Test, two contestants will be eliminated and the remaining chefs will face the challenge of working in a professional kitchen. The third and final challenge will involve cooking one final dish for the judges in the MasterChef kitchens.

John Torode said excitedly:

"It's a new year, a new MasterChef, bundles of talent, huge amounts of potential, amazing cooking - now the fight can begin!"

Fellow judge Gregg Wallace added:

"MasterChef is back and the eighth series is very exciting. We've got some fantastic talent cooking their hearts out in some truly outstanding places. As we know, cooking does not get tougher than this!"

The popular BBC One cooking show will return on Tuesday 17th January at 9pm. The official website for the cooking competition featuring clips and recipes can be seen here
