Amazon sign multi-year deal for Lord of the Rings prequel series
A week after talks were announced for a Lord of the Rings TV series, Amazon has signed a multi-season deal to produce a 'prequel' series, with the potential for a spin-off series too.
This will not be another adaptation of the classic trilogy by JRR Tolkien, which was done so masterfully by Peter Jackson, but will explore new storylines preceding The Lord of The Rings, The Wrap has confirmed. The series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.
It is not known whether this series will attempt to adapt the prequel novel The Silmarillion or be completely original material, or whether it will be based on the movies. While details are still vague, Sharon Tal Yguado, head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios made the following statement:
“'The Lord of the Rings’ is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth."
Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins added:
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for ‘The Lord of the Rings. Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
More new on this new series as we have it.
