UPDATE: Kevin Spacey to be written out of House of Cards' final season?
As further allegations continue regarding Kevin Spacey's sexual misconduct, production continues to be on hold on the final season of House of Cards. And now Netflix, has confirmed they have cut ties with Spacey altogether.
Here's the official statement from the streaming provider:
Gore is the upcoming Gore Vidal biopic starring Spacey in the lead role. A number of changes are being considered for House of Card's final season, with The Hollywood Reporter claiming that Netflix are even considering writing Spacey's Frank Underwood out of the 2018 season altogether, with Robin Wright's Claire Underwood taking the central role.
In the Michael Dobbs book that inspired House of Cards, Frank's character dies, so this could be a likely route for the end of the show. There is also the possibility that the show could be cancelled altogether, ending the show with season five.
More news as we have it...
And here's the previous details from the 31st October...
Following the revelations made against Kevin Spacey by Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp, Netflix have made the decision to cancel their Spacey-helmed House of Cards after its sixth season. The series, currently in production, will bow out after its 2018 airing (though certain internet rumours suggest the sixth season was always going to be the show's last anyway.
Rapp recently confirmed that Spacey sexual advances against him when he was just 14. Spacey made the following statement in response.
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.
“I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man,”
Linking this assault to opening up his sexuality was met by a huge amount of criticism.
House of Cards' cancellation, Netflix released the following statement.
“Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”
