Are Outnumbered's days numbered?

Television news is slowly turning into a eulogy. Recently we have heard news about the cancellation of Shooting Stars, Dirty Digest, et al. Now BBC One sitcom Outnumbered looks to join that ever-growing list. The reason: the child actors are getting too old.

14 year old actor Tyger Drew-Honey revealed that the sitcom's long-term prospects depend on whether the writers can maintain the ideas for the children when they enter secondary school. Young actress Ramona Marquez made history when she won a British Comedy Award for her portrayal of Karen, aged just eight years old in 2009. However, all the child actors are approaching their teens.

Tyger told The Sun:

"There's a special on Christmas Eve. Next year there'll be a Comic Relief special and maybe another Christmas special.

"I think they don't want to dive and do a whole series because it might not work with the kids getting older."

Although the BBC is eager to commission more series, creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
they take the comedy one series at a time because the child actors grow up so fast.

Outnumbered returns on Christmas Eve at 9:20pm on BBC One. Tyger revealed what we should expect of the special: "My character has a hangover. Grandad's in hospital and we all go and visit him.

"The last Christmas special ended with a bit of a sing-song so there's another one of them."
