Mitch Pileggi confirmed to return as Skinner in The X Files season 11

As The X Files season 11 goes into production for 10 more episodes, fans have got their first official returnee confirmation alongside David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson; Mitch Pileggi, aka Walter Skinner, will be back. Admittedly it's barely news, but it's good to know that Mulder and Scully's boss will be back for more. Hopefully he'll get more to do this time too with the extended episode run.

The full writing team was recently confirmed amid some furor over the lack of female writers. Chris Carter will be writing two more episodes, as will returning season 10 writers Glen Morgan and James Wong. Darin Morgan will also be back to pen a further comedy installment. Former writing assistants from season eight and nine - Brad Follmer, Gabe Rotter and Benjamin Van Allen - will make up the team with one episode each.

The X Files returns in early 2018, almost two years after the frustrating end of the world cliffhanger of My Struggle. In the meantime, if you're planning to catch up on old episodes before the latest season, check out our The X Files Revisited, covering key episodes from all nine seasons, both movies and the 2016 six-part revival.

More news on the show's return as we have it.

The X Files

Chris Carter's The X Files was the cultural zeitgeist of the 1990s, turning Mulder and Scully into television heroes. With its mix of aliens, conspiracies, monsters and serial killers, it revolutionised cult television and returned for new six-part revival in 2016 and another 10 episodes in 2018. Check out our 'The X Files Revisited', reviewing key episodes from across all seasons and both movies and our weekly reviews of season 11.
