We Recommend: Life's Too Short
Starting tonight on BBC2, it’s Life’s Too Short, the latest sitcom from the Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant team that gave us The Office and Extras. This time, the star is not Gervais, but famed dwarf actor Warwick Davis, desperately trying to kick-start his career by appearing in a documentary.
Gervais and Merchant do appear as themselves, along with a host of talent reaching as high as Johnny Depp and Liam Neeson. Yes, it’s a celebrity self-deprecation sitcom, fast becoming a sub-genre in its own right. The most famous examples would be Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, of course, and Matt Le Blanc in Episodes, as well as Jack Dee’s fictionalised alter-ego in Lead Balloon.
With so many similar shows already, it’s unlikely that Life's Too Shortwill break new ground like The Office did, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room in our hearts for another decent celeb-com. Especially since Episodes, let’s be honest with ourselves, wasn’t as good as it could’ve been.
Whereas Gervais and Merchant definitely know what they’re doing by now, especially in the area of cringe-inducing sitcoms. As long as they can keep the dwarf jokes on the right side of mean-spirited, this ought to be good. We haven’t seen it yet either, so check it out tonight on BBC2 and meet us back here to see what we all thought.
If you can’t wait even that long, the Life’s Too Short page from the BBC features a bit of content, including a half hour Making Of programme on iPlayer. (Although spoilerphobes beware, it features episode footage from throughout the series.)
