Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who?

Will the 2012/2013 series of Doctor Who see Matt Smith retire as the Eleventh Doctor?

Earlier this year, Smith let slip in an interview with the Radio Times that he could be on his way out to avoid being typecast:

"Well, I don’t know how old I’ll be, but by the end of next year I’ll be 29 so… When I’m 40, I won’t be playing the same parts. If people are going to employ me on the basis that I once played the Doctor, that’s up to them. If the part’s right, the money’s good, why not?"

Since then, when asked whether he'll be heading across the pond any time soon, Smith said:

“Well, hopefully soon, you know. I've got another year of Doctor Who but then I'm certainly going to come and give it a shot, come and hang out in LA.”

Could the Eleventh Doctor regenerate to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the show?

Doctor Who Magazine has confirmed that, after this year's Christmas Special, Doctor Who will return in the Autumn of 2012.

Thanks to Geeky Girls Love Sci-Fi for the original story.
