Lots more details about the Christmas special of Doctor Who
A few days ago, we brought you a bit of casting news from the Doctor Who Christmas special, and a few photos from shooting. Now, however, we know lots more details and this Christmas special looks like it’s going to be really rather good.
First, the actors. It’s not been confirmed that Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill or Alex Kingston will appear in the special. However we do have Matt Smith (obviously), Claire Skinner (Sue/Mum from Outnumbered), Bill Bailey (Black Books, Never Mind The Buzzcocks), Arabella Weir (The Fast Show) and Alexander Armstrong (The Armstrong and Miller Show, those insurance adverts with Chris Addison).
The episode will be sixty minutes long and directed by Farren Blackburn. He’s new to Doctor Who, but check out The Fades on BBC Three if you’re interested in his work.
So we know the actors and the director...but what’s the plot?
It’s going to be, as we predicted, set during World War II. Young widow Madge Arwell and her children, Lily and Cyril, are evacuated to Dorset. In a big, draughty old house they find a strange caretaker with a bow tie and a big blue parcel underneath the tree. The foursome embark on a magical, mysterious adventure where they learn that a Time Lord never forgets his debts.
Steven Moffat, Lead Writer, Executive Producer and all round awesome guy, said: "The Doctor at Christmas - nothing is more fun to write. Maybe because it's so his kind of day - everything's bright and shiny, everybody's having a laugh, and nobody minds if you wear a really stupid hat. Of all the Doctors, Matt Smith's is the one that was born for this time of year - so it's the best news possible that he's heading back down the chimney."
And Claire Skinner, who is playing Madge Arwell, said: "I am thrilled to be in Doctor Who playing Madge who is a bit of super-mum. It's a magical part"
Filming will continue until the middle of October, and the episode will almost certainly be broadcast on Christmas Day 2011. How exciting!
