Doctor Who: Spoiler-free preview for Smile
More on Doctor Who
Doctor Who certainly has a theme when it comes to introducing new companions. A contemporary tale, a trip to the future and then a return to the past. It's a tried and tested formula that works surprisingly well and series 10 is no different.
Like those previous episodes The End of the World or The Beast Below, this episode is a solid entry in the Doctor Who canon, and like those episodes, Smile is not going to top the list of best episodes either. But it doesn't need to be. Its fun, its flashy and in true style, it's all about the Doctor trying to impress his new travelling companion.
Smile is a lovely episode with Pearl Mackie's Bill once again the highlight as she bombards the Doctor with questions; this time you really get to see that rapport built up during The Pilot go full throttle and Mackie and Peter Capaldi are a delight together.
Yet again, there are moments that feel like we've seen it all before but the perspective of Bill's fresh eyes make it a delight rather than a chore. The emoji robots are a little gimmicky and the guest stars don't really pack a punch, but along with an intriguing mystery, it's the interplay between the Doctor and Bill that wins again. And with a couple of surprises and a gorgeous cinematography that makes the most of the futuristic planet setting, Smile will do as the title suggests and leave a smile on your face this Saturday night.
