Hidden Gems - Digital Treasures, April 2017
These days we have access to so many amazing digital TV offerings, whether paid for like Netflix, Amazon Prime or NowTV; or free or advertising supported like BBC player, All 4 or ITV Hub. With so much choice it can be hard to decide between all the offerings, there's sadly no cross-platform search or recommendation engine. So, here at The Digital Fix we've decided to unearth some of hidden gems of the streaming TV world, for your viewing pleasure. Every month we'll pick out the best, or most interesting, from what's new, old or obscure.
Line of Duty
Line of Duty is an anti-corruption police procedural that's been reviewing extremely well for the last few years. Originally shown on BBC 2, season four is currently airing on BBC1, and West World's Thandie Newton joins This is England's Vicky McClure and Martin Compston in the cast. Seasons one and two are available on Netflix, with season three due to be added quite soon.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
A blast from the distant past this time! Relive the early second career for then rapper Will Smith, in a show that seemed to define TV in the early 90s. It might have been the most successful sitcom of its era, but this nostalgic gem can't but emphasise how much has changed in 20 years of TV.
When Noah Hawley, the creator of the Fargo TV show, decided to write a Marvel X-Men spin-off, it was to some surprise. However, considering the success and quality of Fargo, it's no surprise that Legion is arguably the best new superhero TV show. Set in a different world to Netflix's Marvel TV shows, this complex and brain-bending show is a rewarding watch and currently being reviewed here on The Digital Fix.
The Young Pope
Starring Jude Law and Dianne Keaton, nobody quite knew what to make of this short run series about the Vatican, despite glowing reviews for Law's titular character. Following the reign of Pope Pius XIII, the first American pontiff, this HBO show is beautifully shot and laced with satire. Not your usual watch!
