Mr Robot creator remaking Metropolis for television
Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi film Metropolis is one of cinema's earliest sci-fi classics, with the dystopian future presented in the film often lauded as one of the major influences on the genre as a whole. And now, almost ninety years later, it will be remade by Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail for television as miniseries for Universal Cable Productions.
The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that Esmail is still very much in the early stages of development, with his showrunner role still to be decided. Apparentlyu the mini-series will likely not air for another two-three years, when Mr Robot (hopefully) reaches its five-year planned endgame. Each episode will apparently cost up to $10 million to make.
The future city of 2026 as shown in Metropolis features two star-crossed lovers, one from the high-rise tower complexes where wealthy industrialists rule and the other from the underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that provide its power.
