Hidden Gems - Digital Treasures, December 2016
More on Netflix
These days we have access to so many amazing digital TV offerings, whether paid for like Netflix, Amazon Prime or NowTV; or free or advertising supported like BBC player, All 4 or the recently relaunched ITV Hub. With so much choice it can be hard to decide between all the offerings, there's sadly no cross-platform search or recommendation engine. So, here at The Digital Fix we've decided to unearth some of hidden gems of the streaming TV world, for your viewing pleasure. Every month we'll pick out the best, or most interesting, from what's new, old or obscure.
We start this month's recommendations in, of all places Norway. This action thriller, rather than the sedate machinations of Denmark's Borgen, concerns a fictional near future in which Russia, with support from the EU, occupies Norway to restore its oil production. There's action, drama and politics here and it's well worth a watch.
To Brazil now! This show, available in English and Portuguese, is another of Netflix's growing body of self-produced works and this one's a corker. The show is set in a future where people are given a chance to go to the "better side" of a world divided between progress and devastation, but only 3% of the candidates succeed. A Brazilian Hunger Games if you like.
Back to this Blessed Isle with this classic, NowTV has the entirety of Spaced available! If you haven't seen this, you must. If you have seen it, watch it again, to see the beginnings or Jessica Hynes and Simon Pegg's writing and acting careers.
Not got much time? Fancy a scare? Fright Bites are individual horror short films, each no more than 5 minutes long.
