First look at Doctor Who 2016 Christmas special 'The Return of Doctor Mysterio'

It's been a long wait for Doctor Who this year, with no new episodes, but with Pearl Mackie announced as new Doctor Who companion Bill and season 10 filming underway, rumoured for April 2017, fans are starting to get a glimpse of Peter Capaldi's third series run as the Doctor.

Today the title of the 2016 Christmas special was announced, the stupendously dramatic The Return of Doctor Mysterio. It's been rumoured that Canadian actor Justin Chatwin would be playing a superhero character, and he could be the titular character for the new episode (if it isn't the Doctor himself), which will see Matt Lucas reprise his role as Nardole from last year's Christmas special The Husbands Of River Song.

The BBC have released a video teaser for the Christmas special, which mixes behind the scenes antics with scenes from the episode.

The Return of Doctor Mysterio will be written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Ed Bazalgette.
