Fox execs confirm significant talks on another season of The X Files

Fans of The X Files have been eagerly awaiting news of another season of the show following the six-episode revival earlier this year. Despite all parties expressing their interest in coming back for more, talk of actual negotiations between Fox, the show's creator Chris Carter and stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny has been rather quiet....until now.

At the Television Critics Association press tour, Fox Entertainment President David Madden made the following statement...

"We would love to do other seasons. There are significant talks with all three principals. We are working hard, and would like to get a new season soon” - Fox

The use of the word significant is a big step forward as is the suggestion that Fox want another season soon. Previous rumours had suggested that it might be up to two years before season eleven materialised.

Fox TV Group Chairman Dana Walden also went on to state that they would like more than six episodes and addressed some of the earlier criticisms of the mythology episodes, which were largely viewed as inferior to the standalone stories.

"The show was off the air for a very long time, and was introduced to a variety of new viewers [via online platforms]… They had a challenge of filling in the mythology and explaining where the characters were and how they got to where they are now. I think going forward there won’t be the same obligation to reset the series.” - Fox

Walden also cleared up some of the confusion over the delays (i.e. scheduling) and expressed her interest in just how many episodes there might be next time.

"“We would have liked to have done more [episodes] in the first place. It was really the limitations of David and Gillian and Chris’ schedules. Gillian lives in the UK, David lives in New York and California, and we do the show in Vancouver. Chris lives up north. So it was just trying to coordinate a time where they all carve out a period to be in Vancouver.

"This time around, the network and studio “have longer to plan” for another season. “We’re in conversations that intentionally we could do more. I don’t imagine it being a full season of The X-Files, but I would be really happy if we were able to get eight to 10 episodes.” - Fox
