Doctor Who Trailer 2011: Analysis
When we first uploaded this trailer, shown at Comic-Con 2011, the only responses we had were “OMG” and “GERONIMO!”
Whilst this does fully capture the spirit of what we felt and the trailer itself, we thought you might appreciate something a bit more...eloquent. I should warn you, however, that a few mild spoilers may follow too. Nothing huge, just the occasional premise of an episode. But nothing huge about the plot — we don’t like spoilers!
(Note: I apologise about the quality of some of these screenshots. It looks better on the HD trailer)
So. The Doctor Who trailer. Allonz-y!
It starts with the Doctor running down a hotel corridor. That’s good, hopefully it means there will still be lots of running in this series. As Jenny said, love the running!
Then Amy is climbing on the back of some kind of motorbike/scooter, driven by Rory, and they drive off whilst glancing at what looks like a body dressed all in black. Possibly this is from the first episode of the new series, “Let’s Kill Hitler”, and the body is a Nazi.
The next shot definately is; it’s the Doctor, dressed up in a top hat and tails, twirling round a cane in front of the TARDIS and a swastika. I originally thought this might be how he was introduced to Hitler (tried to go one place and ended up in another) but I changed my mind when I saw the rest of the trailer...
Anyway. The Doctor starts saying “My time is running...out”. Whilst he says that, the camera flicks from a shot of his face (looking very old and weary) to him standing in a corridor again to a close up of the number 11 on a plaque on a door.
I think this is episode 11, “The God Complex”, which is set in a hotel where the corridors keep changing around. It’s clearly going to be a quite important place as a lot of this trailer is set in the hotel. Also, Smith is the eleventh Doctor...this is going to be the eleventh episode of the series...and the door number is eleven. Am I reading too much into this? Probably. But still. If that is massively important, you heard it here first.
At 0:08 there is a podgy man with glasses pointing a gun at someone. I think it’s Churchill, but I don’t want to say it definitely is in case I’m wrong. But look. It looks like Churchill. But who is he pointing the gun at?
A voice starts “And this...is where it begins”. As it says that we have Craig Owens (played by James Cordon, remember him from series five?) running down a hotel corridor looking worried — See? It’s all about the hotel — and a brief flash of a man looking scared, I don’t know who he is, and a young man seemingly being sucked through a doorway into light.
Then the owner of a voice is revealed to be Scary Eye-Patch Lady from last series, looking very pleased with herself. If she’s looking pleased with herself, that can’t be good.
It cuts to the Doctor shouting “I’m going to die” in a dark room, or warehouse or something. It doesn’t really matter because there is a Cyberman behind him! We haven’t properly had Cybermen for a while, this could be interesting. They must be mightily annoyed the Doctor blew up their fleet.
Then we get a close up of an eye opening. It could be anything — a Judoon, the star whale — but I’m not sure if it’s in response to the Doctor’s plea or just edited to be after it. I think just edited, being honest.
A male voiceover starts with “Something has happened to time”. We see the Doctor looking through a keyhole/peephole (possibly back in the hotel? They have those little peepholes in the door to look out of) and then we get a shot of Amy. She’s pulling off a helmet and it’s making a futuristic “whooosh” noise (that’s a technical term) and looking sad. But the interesting thing is that she has aged. Look at the wrinkles on her forehead, the bags under her eyes, the slackness of the jowls. What’s going on here?
Then we have Hitler saying “Thank you. You have just saved my life” and Amy, Rory and the Doctor looking incredibly surprised. Is this why they have to kill Hitler? Because they saved him and he should have died? I also think this is how they meet Hitler for the first time, and why the Doctor is in top ‘n tails — they save his life, and then he invites them to a formal dinner. But again, I could be wrong.
Then we’re back with Craig, yay! And he’s locked in an embrace with the Doctor, their faces very close and the Doctor’s arms around Craig’s head. Craig says “Doctor, are you going to kiss me?” (I can’t decide if he sounds scared or like a lovestruck teenager) and the Doctor replies “Yes, Craig, yes I am”. No idea what’s going on here, but Doctor Who is never shy of same-sex snogging so...
Then we have Amy walking into an Alice-in-Wonderland-esque garden...
...and a brief shot of a spaceship. I have no idea what either of these are.
We have a shot of a Nazi building, again probably from the first episode.
And then the TARDIS crashing through a window. Judging by the exterior windows of the Nazi building, the window that the TARDIS crashes through and the style of the lamps in the office, I’d say that this is the same building. I’m also willing to guess that this is how the Doctor meets Hitler; he smashes through the window and kills someone who was supposed to assassinate Hitler. Or something. That’s not how it happened in history, but this is Doctor Who.
Then we have River, in some kind o Egyptian tomb (“Love a tomb!”) turning round slowly, looking all menacing, and wearing a scary eye-patch like Scary Eye-Patch Lady. I’ve mentioned before how River and Scary Eye-Patch Lady look similar, but I don’t think she actually is Scary-Eye Patch lady. Otherwise she would have abducted herself when she was a baby, and that’s just weird. More than likely it’s just a River disguise, like when she pretended to be Cleopatra.
Brief shot of skulls, then a Silence in what appears to be underwater. And some more Cybermen! Looks like a ship of some sort.
The next shot is flickering lights and then Weeping Angels — proper Weeping Angels, too, how exciting! Are they in the hotel too, or just a house? It’s hard to tell.
We have two quick shots of scary looking puppets slowly turning to look at the camera. Scary puppets are always incredibly effective bad guys, so I foresee some creepy episodes this series.
Then we get some kind of...robot or machine opening up and pointing a kind of gun or laser at something.
Then a...Viking? Playing chess? Um, okay.
This is the exciting bit. We get some kind of big, scary monster in what looks like a hotel corridor, and it seems like the camera is looking through one of those peepholes you get in hotel doors. This is almost certainly from the episode in the hotel, and maybe this is the second half of that earlier shot we had of the Doctor looking through a peephole? Either way, it seems this scary monster is the “bad guy”.
Then there is some kind of explosion. It looks like someone, or something, is breaking out of somewhere. Which I realise is incredibly vague, but it’s hard to see. If it's any consolation, that looks pretty much like a Silence to me. But where was it locked up?
Then Rory is trapped in a room, with what looks like the monster from the hotel smashing through the door. Oh, dear. Another death for Rory, then? Wonder how he’ll be resurrected from this one.
Then the Doctor is jumping through a patio door into a house. No idea what is happening here or where or why. There appears to be baby clothes hanging up in the background and an old woman on the right when he jumps through, but apart from that I am genuinely clueless.
Next we have...teleporting people. Again, no idea. Looks interesting, though!
This is my favourite bit of the whole trailer. Rory is PUNCHING Hitler! I love Rory. Rory and River are the best companions the Doctor has ever had. They are all kinds of fantastic.
Anyway. Then we get Amy, with Rory in the background, holding a sword and a stick and fighting robots. These look like the same robots that opened up and had a gun/laser inside from earlier, and Amy looks like she’s wearing similar clothes to that shot where she was incredibly aged. Either way, boys, you get to see Amy Pond being all kickass again. I’m sure your fantasies will be delighted.
This is followed with another brief flash of the scared looking man from earlier, screaming and closing the door. He’s dressed in a suit, so I’m assuming he’s something to do with the hotel.
Then Rory running around robots, I’m assuming taken from the same scene as Amy fighting the robots.
Then there is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of a contemporary looking soldier with a gun, followed by the Silence. Is the soldier attacking the Silence? It’s hard to tell.
We have someone after this who...well, he looks like he’s being beamed up to the Enterprise, actually. Doctor Who is clearly taking inspiration from Star Trek.
Then it’s back to the doorways with the light, with that young man again. The Doctor is either trying to pull the man into the light, or grabbing onto the man to stop himself being pulled in. Either way, this light is clearly going to be an episode premise. I think.
A brief shot of the big scary monster running through the hotel again. Be scared of the big scary monster. He’s going to be important judging by his teaser-trailer time.
More explosions and more Cybermen. I have a feeling their ship is going to take a beating. There’s a split second of them holding their heads before they explode...looks like the Doctor wins again, then. Sorry if that was a spoiler, but if it is then you’re really not getting the general theme of Doctor Who.
Anyway, then we’re back to looking at the Doctor’s death. Scary Eye-Patch Lady voiceovers “An impossible astronaut will rise from the deep and strike the Time Lord dead” whilst the Doctor sees his death date and location on the TARDIS console, the astronaut comes out of the water and shoots the Doctor.
Then we get a shot of the Doctor in the TARDIS, looking cheerful and saying “Haven’t you figured it out, yet?”
I only have three thoughts on this trailer and what it means for the series.
Firstly, it seems we’ve got glimpses of almost all the episodes in this series here. However, a lot of shots appear to have been edited so they’ve got other bits in between them, or so they’re in the wrong order. It’s a very cleverly edited preview — all these speculations could be totally wrong, because they’ve misled us with editing.
Secondly, where is Melody? Amy and Rory had a baby, yet she is missing entirely from this preview. Surely she’s in the next series? Amy isn’t going to just leave her baby.
Finally, this new series looks utterly amazing. I don’t know if I can wait a month.
