Sherlock series four starts filming - new details emerge...

Fresh off the set of Doctor Strange, which has wrapped principal photography, Benedict Cumberbatch has returned to the UK to start filming Sherlock series four. And as production begins on three new episodes, the BBC have released their first synopsis.

"Series four begins with the nation’s favourite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge – becoming parents for the first time." - BBC

Series showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss also issued their own statement, promising Sherlock series four will deliver “laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases”:

“Sherlock series four – here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street – and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax…" - BBC

Rachel Talalay, who directed the last couple of two-part series finales of Doctor Who will be helming the first - as of yet untitled - episode, the first female director on the show to date. Details of series four, which will also see Martin Freeman and real-life partener Amanda Abbington returning, are still a little sparse, but here's what Moffat had to say about the show in January...

"The first series was all about the beginning of their friendship. Second about the formative stages, the love and fear and loss and all that. The third was good days, me and my pal and my pal’s wife. Those are golden days. The missing element in a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptations is allowing it to be funny. There’s a lot of humor in Sherlock Holmes, and it’s ignored in a lot of adaptations. [Season 4] is going to be… I suppose you’d say… consequences. It’s consequences. Chickens come to roost. It’s dark in some ways—obviously it’s great fun and a Sherlock Holmes romp and all that—but there’s a sense of… things… coming back to bite you. It’s not a safe, sensible way to live. It’s hilarious and exhilarating some days, but some days it’s going to be bloody frightening." - BBC
