Hidden Gems - Digital Treasures, April 2016

These days we have access to so many amazing digital TV offerings, whether paid for like Netflix, Amazon Prime or NowTV; or free or advertising supported like BBC player, All 4 or the recently relaunched ITV Hub. With so much choice it can be hard to decide between all the offerings, there's sadly no cross-platform search or recommendation engine. So, here at The Digital Fix we've decided to unearth some of hidden gems of the streaming TV world, for your viewing pleasure. Every month we'll pick out the best, or most interesting, from what's new, old or obscure.

Peaky Blinders

We reviewed Peaky Blinders extensively in 2014 when season 2 came out. Now, with season 3 imminent, it's good to know that we can catch up on the previous two seasons on Netflix!

The Honourable Woman

The critically acclaimed and Emmy Award-winning mini-series starring Maggie Gyllenhaal. The show centers on a woman who inherits her father's arms business and finds herself in a international maelstrom when as she continues to promote the reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.

Executive produced by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, with the latter also directing the two-hour opening pilot episode, Vinyl spatters its fictional 70s-based, drug-fuelled tale with representations of real-life rock stars.

BBC iPlayer

Today is the day Ivy Moxam escapes from the cellar; her prison for the last thirteen years. Today is the day she'll return to her home, to her life. Today is only the beginning. With BBC Three going off-air and online-only, be prepared for more of these: Excellent little gems, seemingly buried in the depths of iPlayer. Thirteen is tense drama and well worth a watch.

Amazon Instant

The 100

Set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship housing humanity's lone survivors sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth in hopes of possibly re-populating the planet. This excellent show is part Lord of The Flies, part teen drama, part post-apocalyptic survival science fiction. Sadly only the first season is available on Amazon Prime, but do still check it out.

Netflix is an American entertainment company founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph on August 29, 1997, in Scotts Valley, California. It specialises in and provides streaming media and video-on-demand online. In 2013, Netflix expanded into film and television production, as well as online distribution.
